Flowers and plants from our mountain pastures

27 September 1999: historic recognition

On 27 September 1999, L'Étivaz became the first food cheese in Switzerland to be awarded the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO).

This recognition is based in particular on the exceptional botanical wealth of the mountain pastures, but also on the close link between nature, alpine traditions and the know-how of the mountain pasture producers.

The high-altitude pastures are home to over 237 recorded botanical species, providing a natural and varied diet for the cows during the summer months. This floral diversity is reflected in the cheese: up to 56 different aromas can be identified in L'Étivaz PDO.
